How do I connect my Kenwood DVD player to my Receiver?

Your audio/video system will determine the best possible hook-up of your DVD player. All Kenwood DVD players have multiple video and audio hookup options.  Choose the option with the best quality that is supported by your system.

Video Connections

Composite video: All KENWOOD DVD players have this common form of video hook-up. Connect a standard video cable from the player to the TV (or to an A/V receiver). The connectors are usually yellow and may be labeled Video In or Composite.

S-Video: This 4-pin connector provides a sharper, higher resolution picture by transmitting the chrominance and luminance portions of a video signal separately. Connect an S-Video cable from the DVD player’s S-Video output to the S-Video input of your display. Most televisions are equipped with this type of video input.

Component video: Connect cables from the three video outputs of the DVD player to the three video inputs of your television. These outputs, labeled Pr, Pb, Y, have increased bandwidth for color information resulting in accurate color reproduction. Not all televisions may be equipped with this input. Please consult your display’s instruction manual for compatibility.

Audio Connections

Digital audio: All Kenwood DVD players have digital audio outputs for Dolby Digital, PCM audio, and/or DTS. This option is used by connecting an optical or coaxial cable from the Kenwood DVD player’s output to your compatible receiver's input.

Analog audio: All Kenwood DVD players include two RCA connectors for stereo output. Connect two audio cables between the player and a receiver, amplifier, or TV.

Why do I see black bars on top and bottom of my TV when playing a DVD movie ?

The black bars are part of the letterbox process.  If you set the player to 16:9 wide-screen output,  it will make the bars smaller, but you will get a tall, stretched picture unless you have a wide-screen TV.  In some cases, there may be both a full-screen and a letterbox (wide-screen) version of the movie on the same disc.  There is  a variety of ways to get to the full-screen version (usually only one works, so you may have to try all three):

Check the other side of the disc (if it's two-sided)
Look for a full-screen choice in the main menu of the DVD movie
Use the "Aspect" button on the remote control

Where is the best location for my subwoofer?

The subwoofer is a speaker designed to handle the lower bass frequencies. Since these frequencies are non-directional, the subwoofer does not require a specific placement in the room. The ideal location for a subwoofer is usually between the two front speakers near the wall. You should experiment with trade-offs between placement and different volume and/or crossover-control settings.

How can I connect the TV's audio to the receiver?

If you want the sound from your television to play through your Kenwood receiver, you must connect Audio cables (Red and White) from the Audio OUT (External/Out to amp) of the television to an Audio Input on the receiver, i.e., VIDEO 1 or AUX..

Do not use the PHONO input on the receiver.  This input is not compatible with the standard line level signal coming from the television.

The receiver's INPUT must be set to the same INPUT that the television is connected to.  For example, if the television is connect to the VIDEO 1 INPUT, then the receiver must be set to the VIDEO 1 INPUT.

RF remote control is not working. Why?

Communication between the remote and the receiver is through radio frequency.
Check that the RF antenna is connected to the back of the receiver where it is labeled RF Remote Antenna. It is the black wire with a mini plug at one end, and a wire with a loop at the other end.
If the problem persists, check that the receiver and remote control are set to the same frequency. Other RF components (i.e. a cordless phone) may cause interference so consider changing the RF frequency of the receiver and remote control.
To check/change the frequency of the remote control:

- Remove the battery cover
    - Select frequency 1, 2 or 3 by moving the switch
To check/change the frequency of the receiver:
    -
Press and hold the Setup button for 3 seconds. The display will show RF Band 1, 2 or 3
    - Each time you press and hold the Setup button the RF band will change.

Programming a Non-Kenwood Universal Remote Control

Please contact the manufacturer of the universal remote to get the Kenwood receiver codes. Each manufacturer designates numbers to the corresponding codes for other manufacturer's products. Some may use three digit codes while others may use four. The codes are arbitrary to what the remote manufacturer wants. We can provide you with the codes to control other manufacturers products as we have given codes to their products, but we do not know what codes they have designated our equipment.

How do you program the RC-SUS remote control?

The RC-SUS remote uses the same coding and programming procedures as the RC-R0608, RC-R0607, RC-R0805, and RC-R0905.  Although the remote does not resemble the others in shape, the buttons are labeled the same and will operate the same as the others.  If you no longer have the manual for your original remote in which this remote replaced, you can download a copy of the manual from our web site.

Why does "Clip" appear on the display of the receiver?

When Clip appears on the display, the incoming signal is too high and it is clipping the input channel.  This could result in distorted sound.  Press the SOUND button repeatedly until INPUT is displayed.  Use the MULTI-CONTROL button, and change it to -3 or -6.

Why is the volume displayed in negative numbers?

The decibels (dB) you see on your display measure the volume according to the gain of the amplifier unit.  These are not true decibels.  It is only a point of reference for the receiver’s volume control.  It is a ratio measurement that displays the difference between the audio level and it's maximum capacity.

Why is the Standby indicator light flashing?

The unit is going into Protection Mode.  There could be a few factors that would cause your unit to enter Protection Mode. The factors could be a short circuit in one of the speaker wires, the speakers themselves, incorrect polarity with the speaker connections, or a malfunction with the receiver. First, we recommend that you disconnect all the speaker wires from the receiver. Then, perform the microprocessor reset. This can be accomplished by unplugging the unit from power, and then plugging the unit back in while holding the power button down.
With the speaker wires still disconnected, power up the receiver and slowly increase the volume. If the unit still shuts off without the speakers connected, the unit has a malfunction and needs to be forwarded to an Authorized Kenwood Service Center for evaluation. You can locate the nearest service center in your area on our web site, or by calling (800) KENWOOD. Though we try to locate service facilities in local areas for our customers, at times a consumer may be required to ship their product to the facility for repair.
If the receiver does not shut off, this test would confirm that a speaker wire has shorted or there may be a short in the speaker itself.
